CS was, and always will be remembered for its solid multiplayer and modability, not singleplayer.įun Fact: Half of the missions that Counter-Strike: Condition Zero - Deleted Scenes includes are based on unreleased Gearbox Software multiplayer maps modified by Ritual Entertainment for this singleplayer campaign, while others are original creations. I still prefer CZ over 1.6 myself though, and DS is definitely an underrated gem, it's just too bad not nearly enough people were interested in a singleplayer CS experience. So, CZ and DS' life span was effectively a couple of months. Just a few months before HL2 and CSS, so neither CZ or DS had the chance to grow, as reflected in CZ in particular which remained permanently foreshadowed by 1.6, mainly because it was tied to Steam I think, while 1.6 also had WON versions which boosted its popularity even further among pirates, and of course, it already having a reputation established as a solid HL1 mod at its origin. Then, its final nail in the coffin was the release window.
It brought many new ideas to the table, but it still wasn't enough to shake off that feeling. It was a pretty ambitious game, and had a lot of variety in its level design and environments, with many different enemies, but what held it back, I think, is one, the reputation at the time, and two, that it felt a bit too much like a glorified singleplayer CS experience. The combat in DS is mostly straight CS gameplay but with better AI and more features such as stealth, using cameras to take photos of crucial items, a blowtorch to blow up latches, RC bombs to destroy roadblocks, being captured and losing your equipment, and so on. If I remember correctly, at the time DS received mixed reviews and that prompted Valve to take it back, but it was eventually still released, along with Condition Zero which was essentially 1.6 but in HD and with a bot campaign. It isn't talked about more often mainly because of its reputation I think.
